Viktor Frankl may be instructive here, when he distinguishes the "will to power" from the "will to meaning." I imagine what motivates AI -- if, indeed, AI can ever experience motivation -- is the former.
Given that meaning-seeking distinguishes humans from, say, feral cats, I'm worried not that machines may experience sentience, but that a tipping point of humans may lose theirs.
